Comfort Food

I’m going through one of our older cookbooks on stews from around the world. This one is called “Satarasch” and it is a traditional stew from some regions in east europe. Right before serving one adds some sour cream to the stew. Something very comforting on colder days.Recipe “Satarasch”

Japanese sweets – Higashi

Tonight we opened a small box that was in the package Yasuko’s mom sent her. Inside there are some traditional japanese sweets called Higashi (干菓子).They are little sugar pieces of art. So we decided to setup the softbox, take one of Yasuko’s beautiful dishes and shoot some pictures of them. Some of the shots came out pretty good I think. I am really enjoying the light that the softbox produces.Go to my website (www.gallarotti.net) and visit my gallery to see more pictures of food.Once you are there you can also take a look at www.francescogallarotti.com, my photography portfolio.
A Photog’s Pheast–Week 6 Spinach Salad with Toasted Pine Nuts

Wow, trying to be creative in presenting food is quite challenging! As I stand in the supermarket check out line, I’m now drawn moth-like to the glossy foodie mags that show equisite photography of the seemingly most mundane food items, and I’m soooo jealous! (And broke–as many of these magazines are now in my house, lol.) I think to myself “I can do that!” and then of course, I get home and make my attempt to show something I’ve cooked/made look scrumptious, delectable, and mouth-watering, and inevitably it comes off as flat, lacking dimension, and kinda pale…lol. But at least we’re eating well, lol. This is just a simple lunch I made yesterday of baby spinach leaves, apples, celery, cucumber, and of course–the magic ingrediant–toasted pine nuts! They are expensive, but man-oh-man, what a flavor they add when lightly toasted first in a dry sautee pan. If you have never heard of them, or used them–I highly recommend you try! I toss them into cookies, into salads, and even into some pasta dishes, and they just provide that beautiful gourmet touch. I dressed this with a light poppy-seed dressing. Yumbo!
